Most of you know my good news....I’m pregnant and am expecting a baby in August. I have offended many a Virgo (namely Karen - repeatedly) by suggesting that I might try for a Leo premie. Sorry Virgos (I mean Karen)! This all brings me to something I had addressed in the past but now find myself, with my new blog as a vehicle, thinking of and readdressing - our policy about children in the salon. Since I am now going to have a baby of my own, there has been some speculation that I might make a new policy and begin allowing children under 12 in the salon. Our policy has never been personal, certainly, although it wouldn’t be a preference of mine to style children’s hair, admittedly. Not everyone would add children to their job description. But I do want to take the opportunity to really go over exactly why we have this policy. I hope this clarifies things for you and brings it into perspective. And I also hope, if you have children, that you can realize that there are many ways in which you and your child benefit.
Safety. There are so many reasons that it is not safe to have a child here that I have trouble knowing where to begin. We have scissors, chemicals, flat irons, and even rolling chairs with a tendency to roll away leaving the child on the floor (this has happened!).
Timeliness. We run on a schedule and we really try to be on time. If you are attending to your child or infant while receiving a service, it can be impossible for us to keep to that schedule and can effect many clients who are also keeping to their schedule.
Space. We are so busy and so full most, if not all of the time, there is literally no room for a baby or a child. If I had all the resources available, I would have a children’s area with a sitter and you could drop off your child and know they were safe. However, that isn’t possible within the space we work in.
Spa services. We offer facials and have a spa room. It is not the most relaxing experience to receive a facial while listening to a child (or, in some cases, their toys) chatter away or, in some cases, cry. If that were relaxing you would find the CD’s of children’s sounds located between Yani and World Music in the CD stacks. Alas, they aren’t.
Relaxation. There are many people who enjoy their time here for themselves and, although disappointed with this policy at first, have come to appreciate how much more relaxing it can be to be able to do something by and for oneself.
Adult Conversation. As you can see by our website, we are not the most conventional of people and we love to chatter about anything and everything. I assure you that there are many conversations you may not want your child to be privy to.
In saying all that, we absolutely understand that sitters, when available, can cancel and that scheduling can be an issue for a parent. We hope you also understand our position and why we have the policy that we do and hope that you can see it as a positive as well. Thanks for understanding!
I hope that this blog didn't bore any of you non baby people or anyone who could care less about a childrens' policy. I had to get that out of the way so that I can talk about way more pertinent issues like......what is going on with Kate Gosselin’s hair (speaking of children)? I should have spent this blog talking about our Kate Gosselin Hair Policy. Kate Gosselin hair or crying 5 year old? Hmmmm......difficult decision. What haircut does the screaming 5 year old want? HaHaHaHaHa!
- 03.03.2009Welcome!Hi! Welcome to the new Moshi Moshi website! In preparing all the stuff to get this website up, I have naturally been thinking about where we started and how far we’ve come. We began Moshi Moshi with 2 stylists (Rita and I) and a Girl Friday (the lovely Joanna Welborn who did the pictures for this site). Now, 6+ years later, we have an amazing staff of 11 which includes an esthetician, 5 stylists, an apprentice, 2 Girl Fridays, and 2 in-house teenagers who help us out on Saturdays. Also a list of wonderful clients and friends, some of whom have been with me personally since before Moshi Moshi existed, some since day one and some newbies. I am really grateful to get to work in such a satisfying environment with some of the most talented and funniest ladies I know. I hope you have fun looking through the site and visit often!
